Boss Bitching built in Ruby on Rails

I’ve been receiving some emails asking about the technology used to build bossbitching.com. The website is built with Ruby on Rails (RoR) using a My SQL database. The website is hosted at TextDrive.

The reasons for which RoR was chosen are as follows:

I wanted to get something up quick. RoR lends itself to rapid web development.
Since this is a custom build there was no need for a CMS app.
I am a 37 Signals disciple and believe in the concept of frameworks to go along with OOP

It is possible in the future that bossbitching.com is moved to a CMS app and at that time it will likely be built on PHP. I have looked for RoR CMS apps and even though they seem stable since RoR is its infancy none of the RoR CMS apps are as stable as their PHP alternatives.

October 16 is Boss Day

On October 16 it is National Boss Day. This is a day designed for employees to do soemthing nice for their boss. There are some bosses that deserve such treatment. Even the majority of the bosses that people post about on bossbitching.com probably are good in some ways; of course some are not. I think it’s tough being a good boss and most probably try to achieve that even though they don’t make it.

Forbes - Do You Hate Your Job?

Forbes posted an interesting article on their website today. They mention in the article that the top reason for hating a job is “a difficult boss.”. The article goes on to give some good advice on how to deal with the situation. They suggest that you should not quit straight away. I would add that to get the thing off your shoulders post at bossbitching.com.

Yahoo! Picks - August 30th

On August 30th BossBitching.com was in the daily Yahoo! Picks email. In the email they feature one website as their top pick for that day and then 3 subsequent picks. BossBitching.com was pick number one of the 3 subsequent picks. That makes it the 2nd best pick for that day.

You can also see the Yahoo! Picks on their website. Unfortunately, on the website only the top pick is shown. The great thing with being in the Yahoo! Picks is that it also got into onto users of the My Yahoo! service.

Another side benefit is the is in the Yahoo! Directory under Society and Culture > Issues and Causes > Employment and Workplace Issues.

A lot of traffic was garnered over the the 5 or so days following the inclusion. I really appreciate the hype over the site. There seems to be a lot of folks enjoying what I am doing.

20K Uniques in 17 days

I’m happy to announce that the traffic is steady at Boss Bitching.com. So far we have attracted just over 20K uniques (20,658) and almost 90K in page views (89,845). This is an average of 4.35 pages per unique. It’s very exciting. We are getting traffic and visitors from all over the world.

In the coming months I will do more marketing to get the word out.

Indian Times & Similar Sites

On Saturday August 19 the site (Boss Bitching.com) got an onslaught of traffic. The majority of the traffic came overnight from India due in large part to the an article in the Indian Times’ website - the article captures very well the main idea of Boss Bitching.com.

They compare the Boss Bitching.com site to a number of sites that are not similar but do cover the same sort of ground - My Boss is a Jerk.com, Office Whisper.com and Job Vent.com.

Week 1 Stats

Google Analytics records that Boss Bitching.com has the following stats for the first 7 days (Aug. 8 to 14):

Average: 4.37 P/V
Visits: 14,913
Pageviews: 65,222

Those seem pretty good. This week the Press Release will be sent out to the general public.

TechCrunch Posts Article

The guys over at TechCrunch have posted an article about Boss Bitching.com. And we are getting a spike of traffic right now. They posted within 2 hours of me sending the release. They had some favorbale thing to say in their article.

Some of the comments are a bit hard but others are very encourtanging. The whole idea is not to slander bosses but to give the employees a place to get their issues off their chest. We’re not mentioning names or companies so there really can’t be slander if the person which is being written about has no idea and the folks reading the post have no idea who the post is about.
